Sonic Rush Preview

Sonic has been a huge mascot since the beginning of Sega’s existence. At some point, Sonic was thought of as being the game that would finally top Mario. Although it did not accomplish this feat, most of the Sonic games that have ever come out on Sega have been incredible. Now Sonic is getting an exclusive look on the DS and is looking very good. Sadly, the past few Sonic games on this generation of gaming have not been anything over average. Never fear, the demo of the new Sonic DS, even though it is short, has a lot of potential.

The current demo was very short and only partially playable.  One part had Sonic running across a level while the player would have control of Sonic’s speed.  Controlling Sonic’s speed is accomplished by moving the stylus back and forth as fast as possible. The faster Sonic moved, the more blurry the screen would become.  If Sonic would go fast enough, the game would go into a stunning slow motion presentation.  At the same time while going across the level you would be able to collect coins by tapping the top of the touch screen. In the end, the goal of the game would be to get to the finish line the fastest.

The current demo of Sonic DS may not have any type of special gameplay, but the ideas involved and the graphical capabilities are truly incredible. One feature Sonic has shown is how smoothly the touch screen can affect the top screen (tapping screen makes you jump, moving back and forth has you move faster).  Then the presentation and graphics were very appealing as well. Sonic himself was detailed and looking sharp.  The background he was in looked beautiful no matter if Sonic was going slow or making it look blurry.  Finally, the slow motion presentation was also an excellent feature of what the DS can do.

Overall, the Sonic Demo does not have a lot of anything right now, but what it does have is impressive.  We have been able to see what the DS is truly capable. Right now, it is not confirmed if Sega will expand on the gameplay shown at e3 for their Sonic game, but it is confirmed that Sega will be making some kind of Sonic game for the DS in the end.  Whatever the game will become, Sega knows what it is doing.  If Sega is able to build on what they have done so far and make an actual game, Sega has the next must buy game for the DS.
