Egg Monster Hero Preview

Egg Monster Hero Nintendo DS Preview

Egg Monster Hero should be a new name to most Americans. The series has been quite popular in Japan for years now, but now it may be possible for the series to come to America. Thus far, there have not been too many RPG’s announced for the DS and so Egg Monster Hero will be an anticipated game for casual RPGer’s and RPG fanatics alike.

The RPG king Square-Enix is developing egg Monster Hero. This should ease us a bit, as such a gifted developer is making the game.  After the long hiatus of developing for Nintendo, Square-Enix has already scored a blockbuster hit with Final Fantasy Tactics for the Game Boy Advance.  Now we can only hope the game will be a success, but this should not be too much of a problem because the demo at E3 was almost first-rate.

Two parts of gameplay were demonstrated in the most recent demo.  One of these parts includes two armies of small troops fighting against each other.  You would take the role of being the general for one of these armies. The second part was a fight between two monsters and you would be one of the monsters fighting the other.

The gameplay of the two armies fighting was entertaining.  You would be required to move your army around the battlefield to attack your enemy with your stylus on the touch screen. Once your turn ended, your actions and the fighting between the armies would be displayed on the upper screen.

In the case of the two monsters fighting, the top screen would be composed of the animations of your monster and your enemies.  The bottom screen would show a girded area of the enemy. Here you would choose where you would like to attack the enemy and could watch yourself attack the opponent in beautiful animation on the top. Then the adversary would do the same to you.  This is essentially all that was shown for the gameplay relating to this.

Currently, the graphics of the game are superb. The animations of the two different types of play were unique and exciting. The monsters themselves looked quite detailed and interesting. The armies on the other case did look nice moving around, but as you look closer, you will notice that there is not variety. The actual soldiers are not very different from each other and many are actually the same.  With any luck this will be improved upon launch.

Even though we have no confirmation about online play, it seems very possible that Egg Monster will support it.  In one of the screens, it is very interesting to notice one of the players having numbers in their name.  Unless that is some despicable job of translating, Square-Enix may have been playing around with online play. A few ideas of online play that come to mind are that there could be a main hub in where people could challenge others, then in the battles there could be voice chat, and also a statistics of players and a high score section.

Egg Monster Hero is turning out to be a fine piece of gaming. However, if Square-Enix is able to show us how the story will be displayed (i.e. through good-looking cut scenes) and the synopsis of it, Egg Monster Hero could be much more appealing. There is a lot going for it presently with possible online play and a good basis of gameplay. This could easily be the pioneer for RPG games on the DS if done properly.  For that reason, we must wait and see whether Square-Enix can carry out this solid foundation of a game to be a first generation classic for Nintendo DS.

We will keep you up to date as we learn more about the game.

Hype Meter 9 Metroid Prime seems to be the game that could really make the DS the hit it deserves to be.
