Pac-Pix Nintendo DS Preview
Namco has two games of the same franchise coming out for the Nintendo DS. The first is simply an updated version of Pac-Man, but Pac-Pix is more unique and innovative. Pac-Man’s gameplay is quite simple. You take Pac-Man around a board gobbling up small pellets. Once he intakes one of the few special pellets, he is able to then eat up the four ghosts that are themselves trying to eat Pac-Man. If Pac-Man loses his power, he will once again have to be the prey of the ghosts. Pac-Pix is taking in the basics of Pac-Man and adding in a very innovative theme. You will actually be drawing Pac-Man!
Once you start the game, you will be asked to try to draw Pac-Man. Once you successfully draw Pac-Man, he will come to life. Be warned though, you have to be accurate. You can’t just draw a blob and hope for it to work. If you take your time and actually draw the mouth and something resembling a circle, you will be fine. Once you do get an accurate depiction of Pac-Man, then you are ready for the actual game. You will then have to be very quick on your feet because there will be no walls or controls to guide Pac-Man. Therefore, to prevent him from falling off the screen (you lose if he goes off the screen), you will once again have to use your stylus to make walls. These walls will move Pac-Man to a different direction and with a bit of luck have him gobble up the ghosts.
All of the action of Pac-Man is done on the bottom screen. The top screen shows all of the statistics of the game including how much time is left, the ink you have left (we will discuss this later), and your score. The design of the top screen is very simple and elementary like, but fitting for the game. There is definitely no detailed or amazing graphics on the top or bottom screen, but it is obvious that Pac-Pix was created solely to show the novelty of the touch screen.
